Cloth Diaper Terminology

All-in-One (AIO) - a cloth diaper with moisture resistance and moisture absorbency built into a single piece.

Pocket - a moisture-resistant diaper with a pocket in which you can stuff an absorbent insert or prefold.  Goes on the baby as a single piece, but separates for washing and drying.

Insert - the piece that goes inside a pocket diaper, made of hemp, cotton, bamboo, or microfiber.

Fitted - a moisture-absorbent diaper that attaches with Velcro or snaps but needs a cover to provide moisture resistance.

Prefold - an absorbent rectangular diaper that can be attached with a Snappi or pins, but needs a cover to provide moisture resistance.

Cover - an item made of PUL, wool, or fleece that provides moisture resistance but no absorbency so goes over a diaper.  Examples include soakers, wraps, longies, and shorties.
